The BBC spokesman claimed that ITV's last FA Cup coverage had produced "record low figures" and that "audiences for ITV's Formula One coverage were declining because they only broadcast it live when it suited them". The BBC, by contrast, had just produced successful Olympic coverage, he added. It was already the leading channel for rugby union, showing live Six Nations and Heineken Cup coverage.
